Eggs thrown at Kosovo PM as parliament session suspended amid political crisis

Kosovo's parliament descended into chaos Saturday when an opposition member hurled eggs at interim Prime Minister Albin Kurti. The incident forced a suspension of proceedings amid a protracted political crisis that has plagued Europe's youngest democracy. Kosovo has held three elections in under two years, with deep political divisions hindering parliamentary function.

Kurti was attempting to delay a key vote while negotiating with opposition parties for the election of a new president. Time Kadrijaj, an opposition lawmaker, threw eggs at Kurti as he sat in the front row of the chamber. "Shameful!" Kadrijaj shouted as she threw the eggs.

Security personnel rushed to protect Kurti, and the session chair ordered a live broadcast to be stopped. Despite the disruption, Kurti appeared unfazed. "If being hit by eggs is the price for continuing dialogue, I am happy to pay this price," he said. Kurti, 51, has experienced parliamentary disruptions before; his own party once released tear gas in the chamber to protest a vote when they were in opposition.

Kurti's Vetevendosje (VV) party won the most votes in the last election but lacks the two-thirds majority needed to elect a new president. This necessitates ongoing negotiations with opposition parties.
