Egypt ranks among the world’s leading fertilizer producers and exporters

Egypt’s fertilizer industry has strengthened its position in global markets because its plants have maintained stable production while energy crises and geopolitical tensions disrupted supplies elsewhere, Industry Minister Khaled Hashem said.

Hashem attributed the sector’s performance to Egypt’s industrial base, reliable energy supplies and abundant natural resources, particularly phosphate, a key input for fertilizer production. He said government support in recent years had also helped the industry withstand international disruption.

European demand for Egyptian fertilizer has increased, according to the minister, after several European plants shut down during global energy crises. Stable Egyptian output, he said, has made locally produced fertilizer more competitive and helped expand exports.

Hashem made the remarks during a visit to Suez Governorate, where he inspected a fertilizer plant and a sugar refinery in the Suez Canal Economic Zone. He was accompanied by Suez Governor Hany Rashad.

The minister also described sugar as a strategic commodity because of its effect on food security and market stability. The ministry is working to raise domestic production and improve manufacturing efficiency, with the stated aim of reaching sugar self-sufficiency while increasing exports.
