Ekiti farmers elect new executives, end three-year crisis

After a protracted three-year internal crisis, the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) in Ekiti State has finally achieved a much-needed reconciliation. The election and inauguration of a new, unified executive committee mark a significant turning point, promising to restore stability and focus on the welfare of the state's farmers.

We are arranging the data of farmers. We are also striving for avenues to make farmers’ welfare number one. We are introducing a health scheme for farmers in the country in the interest of our wellness and wellbeing.

This period of division, characterized by the emergence of two parallel state chairmen, had unfortunately deprived farmers of crucial support from both state and federal governments. The resulting disunity directly impacted agricultural productivity, leaving many farmers struggling to thrive. The resolution of this leadership dispute is therefore not just an internal matter but a vital step towards revitalizing the agricultural sector in Ekiti State.

We are also trying to organise ourselves into cooperatives and as well creating a market system whereby farmers will be directly in charge of their produce.

Under the leadership of the newly elected State Chairman, Sunday Adekogbon, AFAN Ekiti is poised to recover lost ground. The association has outlined ambitious plans, including the formation of farmer cooperatives, the establishment of a dedicated health scheme, and the creation of a more efficient market system where farmers have greater control over their produce. These initiatives are designed to foster a conducive environment for farmers to succeed and to address critical issues such as post-harvest losses through processing and value addition.

Farming in Ekiti State had not been moving the way it should move. The government had not really been carrying the farmers along because we are not together. Today, we thank God that we are together.

The reconciliation was facilitated by the Senior Special Adviser to the Ekiti State Governor on Agricultural Extension Services, Sikiru Olowoyo, who played a key role in bringing the two factions together. With unity restored, AFAN Ekiti anticipates renewed partnership with the government, which is expected to translate into increased support and assistance for farmers. The focus now shifts to rebuilding trust, enhancing productivity, and ensuring that the farmers of Ekiti State are adequately supported and recognized.
