Elda mayor calls Messi's interest in Eldense “spectacular news”

Elda Mayor Rubén Alfaro says the possibility of Leo Messi becoming Eldense's largest shareholder is “spectacular news” for the Alicante city and its football club.

After learning that the Argentine star had reached a preliminary agreement with the club's current owners, Alfaro contacted Messi's representatives handling the operation. He had also met days earlier with Eldense's current president, Carolina Holguín.

Alfaro also highlighted the municipality's support for Eldense over the past 12 years. The backing included economic, sporting and institutional assistance, as well as the provision and improvement of municipal facilities. He said that support helped stabilize the club's management and contributed to its return to Spain's second division in 2023 after 60 years in lower categories.
