Elderly, disabled man dies after helmet attack in Turkey

An 80-year-old man with a physical disability has died in Turkey's Mersin province, 17 days after being severely beaten with a helmet by a masked attacker. Hasan Hüseyin Belen succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment at a hospital.

The incident occurred on July 24 in the Koyuncu neighborhood of the Erdemli district. Adnan Yalçın, 44, who concealed his face with a helmet, attacked Belen while he was sitting in a chair in his garden. Belen, who was unable to defend himself, collapsed to the ground. The assailant fled the scene.

Neighbors heard the commotion and alerted authorities, leading to the dispatch of health and police teams. Belen was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Following an investigation that involved reviewing approximately 380 hours of footage from Kent Security Management System records and 114 security cameras from nearby businesses, police conducted simultaneous operations at three different addresses.

The suspect, Adnan Yalçın, was apprehended at one of the locations and taken into custody. He was subsequently arrested by the court. Belen's body was sent to the morgue for an autopsy as the investigation into the attack continues.
