Elderly man rescued from car in Taitung floods; over 60 evacuated from landslide-risk village

A 92-year-old man was rescued from his car after it became trapped in rising floodwaters in Taitung City, Taiwan. The incident occurred around noon on August 23, when the elderly man and his daughter were driving through a low-lying area.

Their car stalled due to water overflowing from a drainage ditch onto the road. The elderly man, fearing the strong currents, remained in the vehicle. Firefighters arrived at the scene and safely escorted the pair to higher ground, where they were met by relatives.

Meanwhile, in Taitung County's Taimali Township, the village of Jinlun, known for its hot springs, was placed under a red alert for landslides. More than 60 elderly residents and children from areas near the mountains were evacuated to the Jinlun community center. Those with mobility issues were assisted by police vehicles to reach the shelter.

The region has been experiencing torrential rainfall, leading to various emergencies. In Taitung's Lanyu, "waterfalls" formed from mountain torrents. The Luyeh Township experienced significant landslides blocking roads, prompting the local government to close them off. The severe weather has disrupted daily life and prompted significant emergency response efforts across Taitung.
