Elderly Woman Robbed of Jewelry in Montevideo Apartment; Suspects May Have Used Scam Tactic

Montevideo police are investigating a midday robbery that targeted an 85-year-old woman in the upscale Carrasco neighborhood. The incident occurred on Thursday when two men, described as being around 30 years old, entered her apartment.

According to the victim and a witness, the perpetrators entered the bedroom along with the domestic helper. They proceeded to break open a safe hidden inside a closet and made off with several pieces of jewelry. After the theft, the men fled the building on foot, heading towards Avenida General Rivera.

Adding a disturbing layer to the crime, Telenoche reported that the thieves may have called the woman before the robbery, claiming her daughter was kidnapped and demanding money for her release. If confirmed, this would indicate a "grandfather scam" or "cuento del tío" tactic, preying on the elderly.

Authorities are currently examining security camera footage from the area to aid in identifying the individuals involved. Witnesses reported that the suspects wore face masks during the commission of the crime. Earlier the same day, a separate home invasion targeting an elderly woman in the Bella Italia neighborhood also resulted in the loss of belongings.
