Elementary school brothers drown at un-opened water play facility in South Korea

Two elementary school brothers drowned at a private water play facility in Gokseong-gun, South Korea, in an incident that occurred before the venue's official opening for the summer season. The tragedy unfolded when the 11-year-old and 9-year-old siblings were at the facility with their mother.

Emergency services received a report from the mother after the two children fell into the water and lost consciousness. Paramedics transported the boys to a nearby hospital, but they were pronounced dead. At the time of the accident, the water play facility was not yet open to the public, and no staff or safety personnel were present. Only the mother and her two sons were at the location.

Police are currently investigating the exact cause of the incident. They are reviewing CCTV footage and interviewing facility staff to determine how the children gained access to the un-opened facility and to assess the safety protocols. Given the shallow depth of the water where the brothers were playing, investigators are considering various possibilities for their deaths, including drowning and electrocution. An autopsy has been requested from the National Forensic Service to ascertain the precise cause of death.
