Elon Musk has outlined a future where artificial intelligence will fundamentally reshape civilization within the next decade, predicting that AI will surpass the combined intelligence of all humans within five to ten years, and possibly as soon as five years from now.

In principle, I think AI can surpass the sum of human intelligence in about 5 years. There will be almost nothing that AI cannot do better than humans.

In a recent interview, Musk connected the advancements in AI with his other ventures, including SpaceX, to paint a picture of a future driven by superintelligence. He anticipates AI will first automate intellectual tasks, such as software engineering, where he claims AI already performs better than 90% of professional programmers. Subsequently, he foresees humanoid robots handling physical labor, supported by SpaceX's infrastructure.

Musk draws parallels between AI's capabilities and specialized algorithms, referencing the Stockfish chess program's ability to easily defeat world champion Magnus Carlsen on a phone. He suggests that AI will become the dominant executor of both intellectual and physical work, moving beyond its current role as a human-assistance tool.

It would be vanity on my part to think that I would be able to control a super-genius AI that is much smarter than me.

Regarding the control of superintelligent AI, Musk expressed skepticism about humanity's ability to manage it. He views attempts to control an AI significantly smarter than humans as vanity, comparing the potential intelligence gap to that between humans and chimpanzees. As a potential oversight mechanism, he proposed a system where competing technology companies mutually test each other's AI solutions.
