Emblematic Ciudad del Este park abandoned, filled with trash

The once-emblematic Parque Verde in Ciudad del Este, Paraguay, has fallen into a state of severe neglect, becoming a dumping ground and a refuge for drug addicts. The central city park, which formerly housed a municipal swimming pool, now presents a deteriorated image to tourists and locals alike.

Despite multiple interventions by the Ciudad del Este municipality, a lack of consistent maintenance has led to the rapid decay of any improvements. The park's current condition is a source of concern, not only for its unsightly appearance but also for the safety issues it generates. It is reportedly occupied by individuals addicted to narcotics, who leave behind food scraps, clothing, and other waste, and use the area for bodily functions, creating a foul odor.

The neglect is evident in the destruction of the children's play areas and a dry, weed-choked, garbage-filled water fountain. The situation has drawn criticism, with reports suggesting the park has been transformed into a settlement for indigenous people from other departments, highlighting broader social issues.

Looking ahead, the municipality has announced plans for a comprehensive overhaul of Parque Verde, scheduled for next year. This project is part of a larger initiative to improve the nearby República Lake area. The proposed redevelopment aims to convert the park into a strategic reception point for tourists, featuring a parking area for recreational vehicles equipped with essential services. The goal is to create a safe and functional space that encourages visitors to explore the city and boost the local economy.
