Environment Ministry Investigates Irregular Sighting: Person Swims Near Whale

Panama's Ministry of Environment (MiAmbiente) has launched an investigation into an irregular whale sighting captured on video. The footage shows a person swimming dangerously close to a whale, with a boat nearby operating its engines and sound equipment. The ministry has deemed the incident "unacceptable," emphasizing that whale watching requires maintaining a safe distance from the vessel.

Regulations strictly prohibit entering the water, swimming, or approaching whales. Vessels must stay at least 250 meters away, avoid chasing or surrounding the animals, and refrain from any maneuvers that disrupt their movement. Engine operation during observation is also forbidden. MiAmbiente plans to identify those involved, establish accountability, and impose appropriate sanctions.
