Environmental Assessment Completed for Kaunas Hydroelectric Plant Ship Lock Project

Progress is being made on the long-discussed project to construct a ship lock at the Kaunas Hydroelectric Power Plant (HE) in Lithuania. Nearly five years after an initial memorandum was signed by institutions, a crucial environmental impact assessment (EIA) has been completed.

The EIA, funded by the Kaunas City Municipality, analyzes the potential consequences of the planned construction. It scrutinizes the possible effects on the natural and living environment, as well as on electricity generation, transportation infrastructure, and other related areas. This assessment is a key prerequisite for moving forward with the project.

The development signifies a potential breakthrough for improving navigation on the Kaunas Reservoir and connecting it to downstream waterways. The project aims to enhance Lithuania's transport infrastructure and potentially boost economic activity related to waterborne commerce.
