Estonia warns of AI-enhanced ID card photos: Documents could be annulled

Estonia's Police and Border Guard Administration (PPA) is encountering a growing number of identity document photos that have been digitally altered using artificial intelligence or smartphone "beauty filters." This trend is raising concerns among authorities about the authenticity and validity of official documents.

Hannes Lember, an expert in the PPA's document and permit group, told "Geenius" that submitting AI-generated or modified photos for personal documents is becoming a significant issue. While the state does not collect precise statistics on these cases, experts observe a clear upward trend.

Authorities are prepared to annul documents featuring "enhanced" images and penalize individuals who submit them. The PPA emphasizes that such alterations can lead to the document being invalidated. A more immediate risk, Lember noted, is when traveling abroad, where automated systems may readily detect discrepancies between the photo and the individual presenting the document.

The PPA advises citizens to use unaltered, recent photographs for their identification documents to avoid potential issues with validity and international recognition.
