Estonian Triumphs in Prestigious Gravel Cycling Race in Anykščiai

Estonian cyclist Rait Ārm secured a significant victory at the MEGRE Gravel race held in Anykščiai, Lithuania, claiming his first international win in the gravel discipline. Ārm, a professional rider for the Lithuanian team "Energus" and the current Estonian gravel champion, demonstrated his prowess by winning the challenging 150-kilometer race.

In a tightly contested finish, Ārm out-sprinted Belgian rider Jordy Boutsi of "The Grip" and Dane Magnus Bak Klaris from "PAS Racing" to take the top spot. The MEGRE Gravel event is recognized as one of the largest gravel cycling competitions in the Baltic states, drawing a substantial field of 800 participants this year. Notably, over 100 athletes traveled from abroad to compete on the gravel and forest roads surrounding Anykščiai.

It was a tough race. I had never participated in gravel races outside of Estonia before, so I gained valuable experience. There were many attacks, and sometimes the pace slowed down. About 45 kilometers before the finish, two cyclists attacked from a small group, and I chose the right moment to catch them. We cooperated well until the finish. I was a bit worried that they wouldn't start attacking before the finish, because I was riding at my limit and wouldn't have been able to respond to such attacks. But in the finish sprint, I still had stronger legs.

Reflecting on the race, Ārm described it as demanding, noting the experience gained from his first international gravel start outside Estonia. He detailed how he responded to attacks and collaborated with two other riders in the final kilometers. "I was a bit worried that they wouldn't start attacking before the finish, because I was riding at my limit and wouldn't have been able to respond to such attacks. But in the finish sprint, I still had stronger legs," Ārm stated after the race.

Ignas Konovalovas, head of the "Energus" cycling team, praised Ārm's performance, emphasizing the versatility of the team's athletes. He noted that while the team primarily focuses on road racing, such successes in other disciplines underscore their high-level capabilities. Konovalovas commended Ārm's "mature tactics and strong character" in securing the win, which continues a successful season for the "Energus" team, including victories in UCI races and a top-three ranking among continental teams worldwide.

While our main focus is on road racing, such performances show that top-level athletes can successfully compete in other cycling disciplines. It's nice to see Rait's first international gravel race end in victory. It was an example of mature tactics and strong character.
