EU Parliament Demands Consequences for Alleged Misuse of Millions by Right-Wing Faction

The European Parliament is taking a firm stance against the alleged misuse of substantial EU funds by members of the now-disbanded right-wing ID faction. A significant majority in Parliament has voted in favor of a motion compelling the administration to reclaim these misappropriated funds, with the possibility of immediate recovery. This decisive action signals a commitment to fiscal responsibility and accountability within the EU's legislative body.

An investigation is also being initiated to ascertain whether the responsible MEPs can be held liable for intentionally or grossly negligently approving unlawful expenditures. This move comes after auditors from the Parliament's administration concluded that at least 4.3 million euros were improperly used by ID group members during the previous legislative term. The report indicates that funds were channeled to companies associated with the faction and to organizations opposing abortion rights.

The ID faction, which included the AfD until their expulsion in May 2024, has since fragmented. Its former members have regrouped into new factions: the AfD joined the 'Europe of Sovereign Nations' (ESN) group, while parties like France's Rassemblement National, Austria's FPÖ, and Italy's Lega have formed the 'Patriots for Europe' (PfE) group. This situation highlights the ongoing political realignments within the European Parliament and the scrutiny that such groups face regarding their financial dealings.
