Europe Battles Extreme Heatwave and Widespread Wildfires

Europe is once again grappling with a severe heatwave, which has ignited historical wildfires across the continent. The exceptionally hot, dry, and low-rainfall summer conditions have created a tinderbox effect, leading to widespread blazes.

The EU's Forest Fires Information System (EFFIS) reports that over 568,000 hectares have burned within the EU since the beginning of the year. Climate change is identified as a key factor intensifying extreme weather phenomena, thereby increasing wildfire susceptibility.

In Albania, 11 active wildfires were reported as of Friday, with the largest in the northeastern Lüre region. Firefighting efforts have largely contained the blaze closest to populated areas, but the Balkan region faces an extreme fire risk according to EU forecasts.

Britain has endured its fifth heatwave this summer, with London recording a high of 38.1 degrees Celsius on Thursday. While the damage has been less severe than in Spain or France, the UK has seen a record number of wildfires. In the West Midlands, fires spread to residential buildings, necessitating the hospitalization of 19 people.

Greece is facing significant fire threats, particularly on the Halkidiki peninsula, where approximately 500 tourists were evacuated on Thursday. Although the fire was later brought under control, authorities remain vigilant for new outbreaks. Greece has raised its wildfire warning to the highest level across much of the mainland.

Croatia's coast saw a wildfire ignite on Thursday evening near Omiš, forcing the evacuation of around 1,200 people. Fueled by strong winds, the fire spread rapidly, leading to one reported death and forty injuries. The blaze originated in the Lokva Rogoznica area and moved swiftly towards Omiš overnight.
