European Clubs Bolster Squads with Young Football Talent

European football's elite clubs are actively recruiting promising young players under the age of 23, injecting fresh talent into their squads as the transfer window progresses. Borussia Dortmund announced on August 3rd the signing of Konstantinos Karetsas, an 18-year-old attacking midfielder who previously played for Genk in Belgium.

This move by the German club follows similar acquisitions by other major European teams. Chelsea secured Valentín Barco, Juventus signed Kerim Alajbegović, and Roma brought in Konstantinos Koulierakis, all reportedly under 23 years old. Lars Ricken, Dortmund's Sporting Director, praised Karetsas, stating, "We are incorporating a player who possesses extraordinary talent."

Karetsas, born in Belgium, has already amassed 114 professional appearances, scoring 12 goals and providing 28 assists. He also represents Greece internationally, having scored three goals in 10 appearances for the national team. Ole Book, Dortmund's sporting director, described the young player as creative and intelligent, noting his ability to "find quick solutions in tight spaces, especially in the final third of the pitch."

Beyond Karetsas, other young Greek talents are also making their mark in top European leagues. Konstantinos Koulierakis, a defender, has joined Roma after impressing at Wolfsburg. Both Karetsas and Koulierakis have represented Greece at a young age, reflecting a growing trend of emerging talent from the country. Other notable young Greeks include Christos Tzolis at Arsenal, Konstantinos Tzolakis at Hull City, and Charalampos Kostoulas at Brighton.

Meanwhile, Kerim Alajbegović, a Bosnian winger, has joined Juventus after a notable performance in the 2026 World Cup, where he scored in a victory against Qatar. Valentín Barco, a versatile midfielder who was part of Argentina's runner-up team in the World Cup, has been signed by Chelsea. Barco previously played for Racing Strasbourg, a club sharing ownership with Chelsea, and is set to compete in the Premier League after 58 Ligue 1 appearances.
