European Transfer Window Heats Up: Roma, Fenerbahçe, Chelsea, and Man City Announce Signings

European football clubs are actively finalizing player transfers with just three weeks remaining in the transfer window. On August 12, AS Roma announced the signing of Nahuel Molina Lucero, a player who was part of Argentina's World Cup-winning and runner-up squads. Simultaneously, Fenerbahçe confirmed the arrival of Romelu Lukaku, Belgium's all-time leading scorer.

Roma welcomed Molina, who spent four seasons with Atlético Madrid without winning a title. Beyond his World Cup achievements, Molina also secured a Copa América title in 2024, marking his second continental championship with Argentina after their 2021 victory. Roma's statement noted that Molina played 249 matches for Atlético Madrid and his first European club, Udinese, scoring 19 goals across both teams since his arrival in Europe in 2020. The new Italian club signing will wear the number 20 jersey.

Lukaku returns to Turkey, where he lived as a child. Since his professional debut with Anderlecht, he has played for nine different clubs, including Chelsea, Manchester United, Inter Milan, Roma, and Napoli, with loan spells at West Bromwich Albion and Everton. The striker scored three goals and provided an assist for Belgium in the 2026 World Cup. "I am in good physical shape and ready to start," Lukaku stated in a message shared by Fenerbahçe on social media. At 33 years old, Lukaku has amassed 324 goals and 100 assists in 692 appearances, according to Transfermarkt records.

Both Manchester City and Chelsea are navigating transitions following the appointments of Enzo Maresca and Xabi Alonso as their new head coaches, respectively. Maresca returned to Manchester City, where he previously served as an assistant to Pep Guardiola, whom he will succeed. As a head coach, Maresca led Leicester City to a Championship title and won the Conference League and Club World Cup with Chelsea.

To bolster their goalkeeping options, Manchester City signed World Cup and Copa América winner Gerónimo Rulli. The Argentine goalkeeper arrived from Olympique Marseille, having previously played for clubs such as Ajax, Villarreal, Real Sociedad, and Montpellier. Meanwhile, Chelsea announced the signing of Pep Chavarría as their latest acquisition under Xabi Alonso. Alonso, dismissed by Real Madrid in January 2026, aims to achieve success in the Premier League, a league where he previously excelled as a Liverpool player. The addition of the full-back from Rayo Vallecano is intended to increase options in the team's defense.
