Evenepoel achieves 'world-class' victory in Alps showdown with Pogacar

Remco Evenepoel claimed a "world-class" victory on the Plateau de Solaison, outdueling Tadej Pogacar in a dramatic mano-a-mano finish on the Tour de France's first major Alpine test. The win was Evenepoel's third stage victory in the Tour and his first on a mountain finish, significantly boosting his standing in the general classification.

The Belgian rider, who had faced criticism for his climbing abilities, proved his mettle by matching Pogacar and his teammate Isaac del Toro. Evenepoel's triumph came amidst a challenging stage that saw the withdrawal of Danish rider Jonas Vingegaard due to a crash, a development that cast a somber mood over the race. Spanish rider Juan Ayuso also suffered a significant setback, losing over two minutes to the leaders.

Evenepoel expressed his elation, stating, "Emotions are overflowing. I felt bad at the start but raced better than ever. They always criticize me for not climbing well, but I proved them wrong today. I believe in myself, and this means so much; it's a revenge in a way. I regret Vingegaard's withdrawal."

Pogacar, despite his efforts to secure a fifth Tour title, was unable to overcome Evenepoel in the final sprint. While his team's strategy with Del Toro didn't yield the desired stage win, Pogacar retains a substantial lead in the general classification. He acknowledged the somber mood, remarking, "It was a sad day because of Jonas Vingegaard's crash; he is a great rider, and the Tour will not be the same without him."
