[Exclusive] CIO Dismisses Dereliction of Duty Complaint Against Lee Sung-yoon

In a move that has drawn sharp criticism, South Korea's Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) has dismissed a complaint against Lee Sung-yoon, a prominent figure in the Democratic Party. Lee, formerly the Seoul Central District Prosecutor, faced accusations of dereliction of duty for allegedly failing to properly investigate several high-profile cases during his tenure, including matters involving current President Yoon Suk-yeol.

Lee Sung-yoon is responsible for making most of the complaints dismissed without even initiating an investigation, despite more than 10 complaints filed regarding the obstruction of inspection and investigation of Prosecutor Han Dong-hoon and Yoon Suk-yeol's refusal of inspection by the Ministry of Justice, the excessive investigation of Wolsong nuclear power plant, and the bribery-like sponsorship of Covana Contents.

The complaint, filed by the civic group 'Save Judicial Justice' (Sasehaeng), alleged that Lee was responsible for allowing numerous complaints—including those related to alleged obstruction of investigations into Prosecutor Han Dong-hoon and the aforementioned cases involving Yoon—to be dismissed without proper investigation. Sasehaeng argued that Lee deliberately and systematically neglected his duties, effectively condoning the non-initiation of investigations, despite the significant public interest surrounding these cases.

This decision by the CIO is particularly contentious given the political climate and the sensitive nature of the allegations. Lee Sung-yoon has been a vocal critic of the Yoon Suk-yeol administration, often speaking out about alleged political persecution. However, Sasehaeng contends that Lee's current position and his past actions as a prosecutor, particularly his alleged inaction on critical cases, demonstrate a pattern of deliberate neglect rather than victimhood.

Sasehaeng has vowed to fight the CIO's decision, announcing their intention to file charges against CIO investigators themselves for dereliction of duty and perversion of justice.
