Explosion damages parked car in Split; police investigate

Residents of Split awoke Wednesday morning to a police-cordoned section of Velebitska Street, where a parked car sustained damage from an explosion that occurred around 00:50 AM. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and initial assessments indicate that surrounding vehicles and structures were not affected by the blast.

The Split-Dalmatia Police Department confirmed the detonation inside the parked vehicle. Following the incident, a portion of Velebitska Street, from its intersections with Bruna Bušića Street to Dubrovačka Street, was temporarily closed to facilitate a police investigation and forensic examination of the scene.

Preliminary results from the investigation suggest that a pyrotechnic device classified under category F4 may have been activated within the parked automobile. This classification typically refers to devices that pose a significant risk and are intended for use by trained individuals.

After the on-site investigation concluded, traffic was restored on the previously closed sections of Velebitska Street, Bruna Bušića Street, and Dubrovačka Street. The police department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the explosion.
