Explosion in Moscow restaurant caused by homemade device, kills three

An explosion at a restaurant in Moscow's Kudrinskaya Square on Saturday killed three people and injured 21 others, according to Russian authorities. The National Anti-Terrorism Committee stated that a homemade explosive device detonated inside the restaurant. The victims included a woman who brought the device, a security guard who attempted to stop her, and a restaurant patron. Images circulating on Russian Telegram channels showed emergency services, including firefighters and ambulances, surrounding the building. Investigators and forensic experts were present at the scene. While authorities have not officially labeled the incident a terrorist attack or identified any perpetrators, the explosion occurred in a city that has been a target of previous terrorist incidents. Since the start of the war in Ukraine in 2022, Ukrainian intelligence services have been accused of involvement in several assassinations and attempted assassinations of Russian military officials and pro-war figures. Notable past incidents include the car bombing death of Darya Dugina, daughter of ultranationalist ideologue Alexander Dugin, in August 2022; the death of pro-Kremlin war blogger Vladlen Tatarsky in a cafe explosion in April 2023; and the deaths of a Russian military chemical weapons chief and his aide in a scooter bombing near Moscow in December 2024. Pro-Kremlin writer Zakhar Prilepin was also severely injured in a car bombing in May 2023.
