Extraordinary Effort Saves Pygmy Hippo Calf at Givskud Zoo

Givskud Zoo is celebrating a remarkable success story in the survival of its first pygmy hippo calf born in 25 years. The calf, born on March 19th, faced immediate challenges due to its low birth weight of just 4.3 kilograms. Experiences from other zoos indicated a grim prognosis for newborns under five kilograms, making the calf's survival uncertain.

However, the dedicated team at Givskud Zoo, under the leadership of veterinarian Stefanie Ebbesen, mounted an exceptional rescue effort. Recognizing the calf's inability to nurse effectively, Ebbesen personally hand-milked the mother, Tanga, and supplemented the calf's nutrition with colostrum from a local farmer's cow. This intensive, round-the-clock care proved crucial in stabilizing the fragile newborn.
