Fact Check: Indonesia's 'Free Vehicle Tax Amnesty 2026' is False

Misleading information is circulating on social media, particularly on Facebook and Instagram, claiming the Indonesian government has launched a nationwide free vehicle tax amnesty program for 2026. These posts, shared by over 200 accounts, feature posters promising benefits such as the elimination of tax arrears, free license plate replacements, vehicle title transfers, and complimentary applications for driver's licenses (SIM) and vehicle registration certificates (STNK).

The purported program is claimed to be valid across Indonesia from July 15 to August 27, 2026, with some versions extending the deadline to October 31, 2026. However, a fact-check by Tempo's team has debunked these claims, concluding that the information about a nationwide amnesty in 2026 is false.

While vehicle tax amnesty programs do exist in 10 Indonesian provinces, they are regional policies, as motor vehicle tax is a provincial tax. These programs primarily offer waivers for late payment penalties, not the principal tax amount. For instance, Jakarta offers waivers on administrative penalties until August 31, 2026, but the principal tax remains payable. Central Java provides a five percent reduction on the principal tax, with adjustments to penalties based on the amount paid. Lampung offers a partial waiver for those with significant arrears, and Papua has a partial waiver for specific years.

Crucially, no regional government has announced a complete waiver of vehicle tax obligations. Furthermore, none of the existing programs include provisions for free license plate replacements, vehicle title transfers, or free SIM and STNK applications, contrary to the viral social media posts. The circulation of fake links related to these amnesty services has also been noted.
