FAM President Race: Ab Ghani Hassan Still Weighing Decision

Datuk Ab Ghani Hassan, the current president of the Malaysia Football League (MFL), remains undecided about running for the presidency of the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM). Despite being notified of his eligibility for nomination for the top post in the national football governing body, he has yet to make a firm decision.

I have been informed by the Competition Committee that I am eligible to contest for President (FAM), but I am still considering this situation.

Ab Ghani stated that his primary focus at the moment is on ensuring the smooth preparation and commencement of the Malaysian League (Liga M) for the 2026/2027 season. He emphasized that the MFL is gearing up for a new season, and his attention is directed towards making it a success.

He acknowledged the nomination but stressed that such a decision cannot be rushed, as it requires careful consideration of the necessary processes and support. While appreciating the trust placed in him by the affiliates who nominated him, Ab Ghani is not yet ready to confirm his intention to vie for the highest position in Malaysian football. He mentioned that the Congress Secretariat Committee has informed him of his eligibility via a letter, but he is still contemplating the matter.

We at MFL are also preparing to start the new season. So, I am more focused on that first to ensure the 2026/2027 Liga M season runs well and smoothly, Insya-Allah.

Ab Ghani's decision is anticipated to be a significant factor in the upcoming FAM elections, potentially intensifying the competition for the presidency. Other notable figures nominated for the FAM presidency include former president Tan Sri Hamidin Mohd Amin and Datuk Seri Shahril Mokhtar.
