Fani-Kayode redeployed from Germany to South Africa after request

The redeployment of former Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode from Germany to South Africa as Nigeria's Ambassador-Designate marks a significant diplomatic shift, approved by President Bola Tinubu. Fani-Kayode himself announced the decision, clarifying that his initial posting to Germany was altered following a personal request for a different assignment. It gives me pleasure to announce the fact that Mr. President has graciously approved my posting as Nigeria’s Ambassador-Designate to South Africa.

Fani-Kayode expressed that his preference for South Africa stemmed from a desire to serve in a nation that shares Nigeria's pan-African vision, possesses Africa's largest economy, and maintains close bilateral ties. His stated interest in a country that aligns with his "convictions, beliefs, and values when it comes to world affairs" suggests a strategic approach to his diplomatic role. This redeployment also involved an arrangement with Senator Sam Enang, who was initially slated for South Africa but will now serve in Germany, highlighting a coordinated effort within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

This came a few days after the initial posting to Germany was announced and after I made a formal representation to the then Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, that I was not comfortable with Germany for a number of personal reasons and given the fact that I had lived in Europe most of my life I would prefer to go to South Africa which is a country that I had never been to and for which I have so much interest.

Crucially, Fani-Kayode has vehemently refuted claims that Germany rejected his appointment, labeling such reports as false and malicious fabrications aimed at damaging his reputation and embarrassing the Federal Government. He has indicated his intention to pursue legal action against the publication responsible, emphasizing the importance of media verification. This stance reinforces the Nigerian government's commitment to transparency and accuracy in reporting diplomatic matters. I also expressed the fact that I would rather serve in a country that shares some of my convictions, beliefs, and values when it comes to world affairs, that has the biggest economy in Africa, that has closer ties to Nigeria, and that is more proximate to my political thinking when it comes to foreign affairs and a pan-African vision.
