Federal government targets end to insecurity with new five-year defence strategy, Matawalle says

Nigeria’s government is preparing a five-year defence and security strategy as it steps up operations against insecurity, Minister of State for Defence Bello Matawalle said in Kano.

Matawalle made the statement during a condolence and assessment visit to the Kano state government after a bandit attack on Chiroma village in Garun Mallam Local Government Area on August 29. He said the government was combining proactive operations, strategic planning and closer cooperation with state governments.

According to Matawalle, a joint operation launched after the attack was led by Brigadier General Saka Jimoh, commander of the 3 Brigade, Kano. Personnel from the Joint Task Force camps at Hawan-Kwano and Kwanar Dangora took part in the operation, which rescued several kidnapped victims around Yan-Kifi Bridge and Marabar Kwari in Garun Mallam.

He pledged further federal support for Kano, including fighting vehicles, weapons and other operational equipment. After meeting privately with commanders from the 3 Brigade and other security formations, he urged them to maintain their operations and intensify efforts to protect communities.

“We will continue to provide every necessary support to our security agencies to keep the country safe. I am confident that insecurity will soon become a thing of the past, allowing Nigerians to live in peace and prosperity,” he said. Matawalle also said citizens must provide credible information to security agencies, while Kano Governor Abba Yusuf thanked him for the visit.
