Félix Tshisekedi launches construction of major boulevard in Kinshasa

Kinshasa's President Félix Tshisekedi officially launched the construction of the Boulevard Docteur Étienne Tshisekedi wa Mulumba on Tuesday, August 11, 2026. This infrastructure project, spearheaded by the provincial government, aims to permanently enhance urban mobility in the Congolese capital, which faces increasingly dense traffic.

The new boulevard will extend 2,020 meters, connecting the Triomphal Boulevard to Place Bakayawu in the Bandalungwa commune, passing through the Lieutenant-Colonel Kokolo camp. Authorities describe the project as a key initiative designed to alleviate congestion in the city center and facilitate movement between various neighborhoods.

During the launch ceremony, Kinshasa Governor Daniel Bumba detailed the boulevard's technical specifications. The road will feature eight traffic lanes, dedicated pedestrian sidewalks, a modern stormwater drainage system, improved public lighting, comprehensive road signage, and green spaces to enhance the urban environment. Bumba emphasized that the project honors Dr. Étienne Tshisekedi wa Mulumba, a significant figure in the Democratic Republic of Congo's fight for democracy, but also represents a vital investment in the city's future.

"This road represents an investment in the future. It will contribute to reducing traffic jams, improving the flow of people and goods, enhancing access to several neighborhoods, and supporting the city's economic development," stated Bumba. The construction will be carried out by the Chinese company CR20, whose general director, Guo Zhuwei, assured that the work will adhere to international quality and safety standards, with a completion deadline of twelve months. CR20 committed to delivering the project on time for its service launch next year, prioritizing local employment and professional training.
