Female Referee Suffers Concussion After Trying to Break Up Player Fight

A friendly football match between French club Metz and Dutch club Fortuna Sittard in Forbach, France, was disrupted by an on-field brawl, resulting in a serious injury to the referee. Mathilde Demoncay, a 26-year-old official, sustained a concussion when she intervened in a scuffle between players.

The incident escalated in the 40th minute when two opposing players began fighting, quickly drawing in others. Demoncay attempted to de-escalate the situation but was struck and fell to the ground, as captured in social media footage. She remained on the field for several minutes, receiving attention from assistant referees, security, and medical personnel.

Ironically, the altercation happened directly in front of a prominent sign displaying the message "Respect the referee." Demoncay was unable to continue officiating the match following the injury, highlighting a concerning moment of player misconduct and its direct impact on game officials.
