Ferry fire in Indonesia kills five, 41 missing

A devastating fire aboard the Mutiara Sentosa 2 ferry in Indonesia's East Java province has claimed the lives of five people, with authorities desperately searching for 41 others who remain unaccounted for. The ferry was carrying more than 200 passengers when the blaze erupted at sea.

Emergency services reported that as of Sunday afternoon, five fatalities had been confirmed among those on board. Rescue teams have managed to save 225 individuals, but the search continues for the missing passengers and crew. Images released by the Ministry of Transportation show the massive vessel engulfed in flames.

The ferry was en route from Surabaya to Makassar when the fire broke out and rapidly spread. Videos circulating show some passengers jumping into the water to escape the inferno, with some reaching nearby vessels by swimming. The cause of the fire remains unclear.

Maritime accidents are a recurring issue in Indonesia, an archipelago nation of over 17,000 islands. Factors contributing to these incidents include inadequate infrastructure, overcrowding of passengers and cargo, weak enforcement of safety rules, and adverse weather conditions. This latest tragedy underscores the persistent dangers faced by those relying on sea transport in the region.
