FG to Announce New Pay Rise for Military Personnel

Nigeria's Federal Government is set to announce a new salary increase for military personnel, signaling a commitment to enhancing the welfare and morale of the nation's armed forces. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to strengthen the country's security architecture.

Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (Rtd), revealed the plan during a workshop for widows and wives of service personnel. He noted that soldiers' salaries were increased from N49,000 to N100,000 during his tenure as Chief of Defence Staff and expressed confidence that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would soon approve a further increase. "We are, however, still making efforts for it to be increased further. We know our President is a listening father who will ensure that our troops are well remunerated because they are sacrificing so much," Musa stated.

The government is also extending support to the families of frontline troops through empowerment programs. The Ministry of Defence, in collaboration with the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN), organized a training and financial empowerment workshop. During the event, a cheque for N250 million was presented to beneficiaries.

SMEDAN Director-General Charles Odii pledged continued support, emphasizing the government's appreciation for the troops' sacrifices. He highlighted President Tinubu's "Renewed Hope Agenda," which includes significant financial allocations to support enterprises across Nigeria. These include N75 billion in low-interest loans for manufacturers, N75 billion for small businesses, and N50 billion in grants for nano businesses, defined as enterprises with fewer than three employees and an annual turnover below N3 million.
