FG unveils new labour reform agenda, seeks employers’ support

Nigeria's Federal Government is embarking on a significant overhaul of its labor administration, aiming to create a more responsive, inclusive, and investment-friendly environment. This initiative is a key component of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's 'Renewed Hope Agenda,' which prioritizes job creation and sustainable economic growth.

The success of these reforms depends significantly on a vibrant private sector. Government alone cannot create all the jobs our growing population requires. Sustainable employment will continue to come from businesses that invest, innovate, expand production and create opportunities for Nigerians.

The reform agenda places a strong emphasis on maintaining industrial peace, modernizing labor laws, and enhancing workforce development. The government recognizes that achieving its goal of creating millions of jobs for Nigeria's burgeoning population hinges on a thriving private sector. Progressive labor policies and a stable industrial relations environment are deemed indispensable for this objective.

This is why the Federal Government remains committed to improving the ease of doing business, strengthening investor confidence and promoting policies that encourage enterprise growth.

Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Muhammadu Dingyadi, unveiled the agenda at a public forum in Lagos, calling for a robust partnership with employers. He stressed that the government alone cannot generate the necessary employment and that sustainable job growth will primarily come from businesses that invest, innovate, and expand their operations. The Ministry is actively repositioning labor administration as a tool for economic development through improved dispute resolution and social dialogue.

Over the past three years, the Ministry has focused on strengthening mechanisms for preventing and settling trade disputes. This includes enhanced conciliation, mediation, and social dialogue, with the overarching goal of averting industrial actions that could disrupt productivity and the economy. The government's commitment to improving the ease of doing business and fostering investor confidence underpins these labor reforms.
