Fierce wildfire advances toward populated areas in Ábrego, prompting stronger emergency response

A large wildfire moved toward the urban center of Ábrego in Norte de Santander during the night of Sept. 6, putting nearby populated areas on alert and forcing emergency agencies and residents to intensify their response.

The fire began on Sept. 5 in the upper part of the Monte Redondo area and spread through the municipality's rural zone. Strong winds accelerated its advance, while the terrain made it difficult for crews to control the flames from the ground. The blaze produced a wide column of smoke and ash that affected several sectors.

Authorities reported that more than 3,000 hectares had burned. The scale of the emergency led them to request air support because ground resources alone were insufficient to contain the fire.

One commercial establishment was also affected. Reports circulated on social media said the flames reached the facilities of the Full Aventura Restaurant, creating tense moments for residents and visitors nearby. Videos shared during the emergency showed the size of the flames and their proximity to populated areas.

The first response came from the Civil Defense and the Ábrego Volunteer Fire Department, according to a report from the National Firefighters Directorate cited by Interior Minister Rodrigo Lara.
