Fiji Welcomes New Zealand's Support for Infrastructure and Energy Development

Fiji is actively deepening its development partnership with New Zealand, a relationship underscored by a recent courtesy visit from New Zealand's High Commissioner to Fiji, Greg Andrews, to Public Works, Transport, and Meteorological Services Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau. This meeting signals a shared commitment to bolstering cooperation across critical sectors that are vital for Fiji's progress.

The discussions centered on key areas of mutual interest: infrastructure development, energy security, and enhancements in public sector efficiency. Minister Tuisawau provided a comprehensive overview of his ministry's extensive responsibilities, which encompass oversight of crucial bodies like the Water Authority of Fiji, Fiji Roads Authority, Land Transport Authority, and the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji. He also highlighted ongoing initiatives to modernize the Public Works Department, ensuring it is better equipped to support nationwide infrastructure and rural development projects.

A significant point of discussion was the progress of the Lakaro Rural Electrification Project in Lakeba, a project made possible through New Zealand's financial support. Minister Tuisawau confirmed that construction is complete, with commissioning pending final engineering assessments. This project exemplifies the tangible benefits of the bilateral cooperation, bringing essential services to rural communities and enhancing energy security.

Furthermore, the meeting addressed the importance of building local capacity through apprenticeship and technical training opportunities.
