Film calling for Taiwan reunification draws fire in mainland China

A mainland Chinese film advocating for Taiwan's reunification is unexpectedly facing a backlash from nationalistic voices within China, casting uncertainty over its future. The film, titled 'The Belief,' chronicles the historical events of 1683 when Emperor Kangxi of the Qing dynasty ordered Admiral Shi Lang to lead a naval victory over the Kingdom of Tungning in Taiwan.

This pivotal battle, known as the Battle of Penghu, ultimately resulted in Taiwan being brought under the Qing dynasty's rule. Promotional materials for the movie prominently featured the slogan: "The reunification of Taiwan is unstoppable."

The film's central theme, bringing the self-governed island of Taiwan under Beijing's direct rule, would seemingly align with current Chinese policy. Evidence of official backing was apparent early on, with the propaganda department of Fujian's provincial committee of the Communist Party listed as one of the film's co-producers, according to government websites.
