Finnish athletes win gold medals at orienteering world championships

Finnish athletes delivered stellar performances at the Orienteering World Championships in Mora, Sweden, clinching multiple medals, including two coveted gold titles.

Ruska Saarela claimed the women's sprint gold, finishing 11 seconds ahead of Sweden's Gabriella Gustafsson. Bronze went to Denmark's Nikoline Splittorff. Saarela expressed relief after a slightly shaky performance, noting, "This wasn't a perfect race either, and at times I was a bit behind the fence and went back and forth on the path. But mostly I managed to keep the pace fast and smooth."

In the men's competition, Tomi Nykänen captured the world championship title, finishing nine seconds ahead of the Czech Republic's Krystof Bogar. Switzerland's Noah Rider took third place. Nykänen shared his elation, stating, "When I left for the competitions, I dreamed of a medal, but I didn't believe in a championship. This is a really great personal achievement."

Further success for Finland came in the junior categories. Liida Lahti won the U20 women's sprint world championship, and Eemil Koskinen secured the silver medal in the U20 men's sprint.

The sprint competitions featured courses that were primarily forest and trail-based. The World Championships in mountain bike orienteering will conclude on Sunday following the relay races.
