KuPS football club resolves financial dispute over player transfer fees

Kuopion Palloseura (KuPS), a prominent Finnish football club, has resolved a significant financial dispute between its professional team operations and its youth development branch. KuPS Oy, which oversees the senior team, and KuPS ry, responsible for youth activities, have finalized a new cooperation agreement, according to Savon Sanomat.

The disagreement centered on the distribution of funds generated from player transfers. KuPS ry argued that it was entitled to a share of "grower" and "solidarity" compensation for players developed within its programs who were later sold to foreign clubs. Notable examples include Matias Siltanen, transferred to Sweden last year, and Otto Ruoppi, moved to Germany this year, with their combined transfers exceeding two million euros, funds that reportedly went solely to KuPS Oy.

Under the new agreement, junior KuPS will now receive a portion of the transfer fees for players they have cultivated who are subsequently sold by KuPS Oy. Furthermore, the youth club will receive retroactive compensation for player transfers from previous years. KuPS ry's chairman, Pauliina Korhonen, confirmed the agreement, stating they have settled enough transfers to "start with a clean slate."

While the specific financial terms of the new deal were not disclosed by KuPS Oy's main owner, Ari Lahti, he indicated the sums are substantial. Helsingin Sanomat previously estimated the outstanding compensation owed to KuPS ry to be between 300,000 and 400,000 euros. This resolution comes as KuPS Oy has achieved considerable success, winning the last two Veikkausliiga championships and currently leading the league. The club has also secured a place in the Europa Conference League group stage, guaranteeing over three million euros in prize money.
