Niskanen's transfer to Blackpool was prompted by Exeter City's relegation. While he enjoyed his time at Exeter, he felt the moment was right to move on after a strong individual season where he played every minute of all 46 league matches. He was particularly impressed by Blackpool's overall package, including a meeting with manager Ian Evatt, who outlined the club's playing style and Niskanen's intended role as a right-back, a position he also played effectively at Exeter.
