Fire devastates over 600 acres of land in Plomari, Lesvos

A significant fire in Plomari, Lesvos, has scorched an estimated 614 acres of land, primarily consisting of olive groves, pine forests, and scrubland. The blaze, which erupted last Wednesday, was brought under full control by Thursday afternoon.

An initial mapping of the burned area and fire intensity was conducted by the Research Group of Tele-observation and Geographic Information Systems at the University of the Aegean. Utilizing satellite data and classification guidelines, the team analyzed the extent and severity of the damage.

The analysis revealed that the fire's intensity varied across the affected landscape. Approximately 164 acres experienced low-severity burning, while 260 acres suffered low-to-moderate severity. A further 180 acres were classified as moderate-to-high severity, and 10 acres were categorized as high-severity burning.

Of the total 614 acres burned, about 473 acres were olive groves, with the remainder being pine forest and scrubland. The incident underscores the vulnerability of the region's natural landscape to wildfires, particularly during dry and hot conditions.
