Fire on Kos: Situation improves in Pyli, but night of anxiety over flare-ups looms

Firefighters are engaged in an all-night battle against a blaze on the Greek island of Kos. While the situation has improved, no one is letting their guard down, and strong forces remain on the ground.

According to Stamatis Kambourakis, Deputy Mayor for Civil Protection of the Municipality of Kos, small flare-ups are occurring in the area and are being dealt with immediately. However, strong gusts of wind continue to be a significant risk factor. The difficult terrain of the area further hinders the work of ground forces, requiring constant vigilance and particularly careful movements during the night.

"No one is complacent," stressed Mr. Kambourakis, emphasizing that the effort will continue throughout the night, aiming to bring the fire under full control and immediately address any new outbreaks. Firefighters, volunteers, and construction machinery remain on site, with all forces in constant coordination. The next few hours are considered critical, mainly due to the winds, as even a small flare-up can create new problems.

According to the latest information from the Fire Service, 15 firefighters with six vehicles are operating at the scene, while three firefighting aircraft and two helicopters are assisting in the extinguishing efforts, carrying out continuous water drops. Additionally, construction machinery and water tankers from the local government are participating in the operation. To reinforce the forces in Kos, seven firefighters from the 11th EMODDE arrived by helicopter from Rhodes to assist in the extinguishing efforts.

The Deputy Regional Governor of Dodecanese, Christos Efstratiou, stated that the state and local mechanism is on full alert, making efforts to control the fire. The focus of the operations has been on containing the fire front and preventing its spread, with ground and air forces operating in the area.
