Firefighter on day off prevents apartment fire by noticing burning laundry

A firefighter on his day off is being credited with preventing a potentially serious apartment fire in Daegu. Hwang Hyun-sun, a fire captain, noticed a faint smell of smoke while passing by an apartment complex on the afternoon of July 26.

His attention drawn by the unusual odor, Hwang investigated the source. He observed smoke emanating from a second-floor window and immediately alerted a nearby resident to call emergency services. He also contacted the apartment management office to gain access to the unit.

Inside the apartment, Hwang discovered a pot of laundry on the stove, actively burning. He promptly turned off the gas to the stove and moved the burning pot to the sink. The apartment was unoccupied at the time of the incident.

Fire officials stated that Hwang's quick thinking and prompt action prevented the fire from spreading and potentially endangering other residents. Hwang remarked, "I remembered the signs of an early-stage fire from my field experience and looked around carefully. I'm glad I could take action before it led to significant damage."
