Five, including four family members, killed in house collapses in Uttar Pradesh

Four members of one family died after their kutcha house collapsed during rain in Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur district on Sunday. Their surviving daughter was seriously injured.

Police said the collapse trapped all five members in Hirni village at about 11 a.m. Officers, fire brigade personnel and local residents rescued them and took them to the Community Health Centre in Patara, where four were declared dead. The victims were identified as Mukesh Kumar and his daughters Maya, Neetu and Pallavi. Kumar's daughter Kajal remained under treatment at Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital in Kanpur.

Three fire tenders with rescue equipment and a mobile disaster-response vehicle were sent to the site. Police said the front section of the house was completely destroyed, while a room-like structure at the back was partly damaged. The exact cause of the collapse was under investigation.

Kumar's cousin Tej Bahadur Singh alleged that police initially failed to answer repeated calls to the Saadh police station. He said villagers carried out the rescue themselves and spent nearly two hours freeing the family. Relatives also alleged that treatment at the Patara health centre was delayed because no doctor was available. They demanded an impartial inquiry and action against those responsible. Kajal, also known as Laxmi, was due to marry in December, according to the family.

In Budaun, farmer Vinod died when a wall of his kutcha house collapsed during heavy rain late Saturday night in Gurugram village. His wife suffered serious injuries. Neighbours cleared the debris and pulled her out, but Vinod had already died. Police sent his body for a post-mortem examination and admitted his wife to hospital.
