Five young Greek scientists to represent nation at European competition

Five young Greek scientists, all under the age of 20, are set to represent Greece at the prestigious European Young Scientists competition in Kiel, Germany. Their innovative projects span diverse fields, showcasing the ingenuity and potential of the nation's youth in science and technology.

Among the selected projects is a wearable Artificial Intelligence system designed for guided breast self-examination, aiming to aid in early detection of abnormalities. Another project focuses on an ECR thruster for satellites that operates without a cathode, a significant advancement in space propulsion technology. The third project tackles a critical issue in apiculture, presenting a novel system to combat the parasitic Varroa destructor mite, which poses a severe threat to beekeeping.

These groundbreaking ideas were chosen from the National Young Scientists Competition 2026, organized by the Ministry of Social Cohesion and Family. The national competition, which ran from January 28 to May 26, 2026, invited participants aged 14 to 20 to present original research. A committee of distinguished scientists evaluated the submissions, recognizing the scientific merit and innovation of these five young researchers.

Greece has consistently performed well at the European Young Scientists competition in recent years. The nation achieved third place in both 2022 and 2023, followed by a second-place finish in 2025. This strong performance underscores the quality of scientific education and the burgeoning research talent within Greece.

Minister of Social Cohesion and Family, Domna Michailidou, congratulated the young scientists, emphasizing their knowledge, persistence, and creativity. She highlighted their ability to open doors beyond national borders and expressed optimism for the future, stating that their participation is an honor for Greece and a testament to the confidence and capabilities of Greek youth in a demanding European arena.
