Fokida Fire: Situation Improves as Winds Subside, Two Homes Lost

The fire situation in Fokida, Greece, has shown improvement as the strong winds that fueled the blaze have finally calmed. Despite the easing conditions, the night was difficult for local residents due to persistent flare-ups of the fire.

Significant ground and air resources remained deployed in the area, working tirelessly to gain control over the wildfire. The fire has caused considerable damage, destroying numerous olive trees and vast areas of virgin forest. In the village of Klíma, two houses were consumed by the flames.

Residents from the villages of Klíma, Kookoura, and Néa Kookoura were evacuated on Saturday afternoon following an alert from the 112 emergency number. They were directed towards the towns of Efpalio and Pefkakia for safety. Early Sunday morning, another alert from 112 prompted residents of Magoula to move towards Monastiraki as a precautionary measure.

While the immediate threat appears to be lessening with the reduced wind, the full extent of the damage is still being assessed. The efforts to fully extinguish the fire are ongoing, with authorities monitoring the situation closely.
