Foreign pilot arrested in Indonesia for alleged drug smuggling

Authorities in Indonesia have arrested a foreign pilot for his alleged involvement in international drug smuggling. Personnel from the Indonesian National Police's Criminal Investigation Unit (Bareskrim Polri) and Customs at Soekarno-Hatta Airport apprehended the pilot, identified by the initials MSO, on Tuesday night, July 28, 2026.

The arrest occurred in the International Arrival terminal of Soekarno-Hatta Airport. Police seized a significant quantity of narcotics, including 70,114 ecstasy pills weighing approximately 25.19 kilograms and packages of methamphetamine. The drugs were reportedly found in MSO's luggage.

According to the Director of Narcotics Crimes at Bareskrim Polri, Brigadier General Eko Hadi Santoso, the operation began when customs officers noticed suspicious items in an X-ray scan of the suspect's luggage. MSO, a pilot for a foreign airline, claimed the bag. During the inspection, officers discovered 14 large packages containing ecstasy pills marked with various logos, such as Lion, Rolls-Royce, Tesla, Labubu, and LV.

The team saw one suspicious suitcase, which was picked up by its owner, MSO, a pilot for a foreign airline.

Initial investigations revealed that MSO confessed to being instructed by an individual in Malaysia to transport the drugs to Jakarta, with a promised payment of 50,000 Malaysian Ringgit (approximately Rp 220.9 million). He admitted to having served as a cross-border drug courier three times previously, including smuggling methamphetamine to Sabah, Malaysia, and seven kilograms of methamphetamine to Jakarta.

Further testing of MSO's urine also indicated the presence of methamphetamine, MDMA (ecstasy), and cocaine. Police are currently coordinating with relevant parties to conduct digital forensics on the suspect's devices and to track the recipients of the illicit goods in Jakarta. Efforts to confirm with Malaysia Airlines regarding the suspect's employment status were ongoing at the time of reporting.
