Forest fire near Barcelona forces evacuations amid severe European wildfire season

A significant forest fire has erupted in the Serra de Collserola hills near Barcelona, prompting authorities to order the evacuation of around 25 residents from their homes in the northern Tore Baro neighborhood due to heavy smoke. Residents in other parts of Tore Baro and the neighboring Ciutat Meridiana district have been advised to stay indoors and keep windows and doors shut.

Approximately 160 firefighters, aided by 12 firefighting aircraft and helicopters, are actively engaged in combating the flames. The fire has already consumed about 35 hectares of land. This incident marks the second fire in the area within two weeks, highlighting the severity of the current wildfire season across Europe.

Experts attribute the increasing frequency and intensity of wildfires to climate change, exacerbated by an exceptionally hot and dry summer. The current fire near Barcelona is part of a broader pattern affecting Spain and the continent, underscoring the environmental challenges posed by extreme weather conditions.
