Former Colombian Footballer Eduardo Emilio Vilarete to Undergo Leg Amputation Due to Cancer

Former Colombian footballer Eduardo Emilio Vilarete, 73, is set to undergo surgery on Monday to amputate his left leg. The aggressive sarcoma discovered three months ago has necessitated this drastic measure, according to local media reports.

Vilarete's daughter, Angélica Vilarete, explained that after the initial tumor removal and reconstruction, the sarcoma reappeared more aggressively. A medical board concluded that amputation, five centimeters above the knee, was the most viable option to save his life. The former player has accepted the decision after careful consideration.

Known as 'el Loco' during his playing days, Vilarete began his professional career at 21 with Atlético Bucaramanga, quickly becoming the team's top scorer with 18 goals. His career spanned several Colombian clubs, including Unión Magdalena, Atlético Nacional, Deportivo Pereira, and Deportes Tolima. He also played in Ecuador for Deportivo Quito, Liga de Quito, and Audaz Octubrino, and in Peru for Deportivo Pacífico, where he retired at 37.

Vilarete represented the Colombian national team in the 1976 Pre-Olympic Tournament, the 1979 Copa América, and the 1978 and 1982 World Cup qualifiers. He won Colombian league titles in 1976 and 1981 with Atlético Nacional and a Peruvian regional championship with Deportivo Pacífico.
