Former Durango Judge Sentenced to Two Years for Bribery

Margarito Galaviz Sifuentes, a former judge in Durango, has been sentenced to two years in prison after being found guilty of bribery. The conviction was secured by the Specialized Prosecutor's Office Against Corruption of the State of Durango (FECCED).

In addition to the prison sentence, Sifuentes must pay a fine equivalent to 144 times the Unit of Measurement and Update (UMA). The prosecution stated that while Sifuentes was a judge at the time of the offense, the act was not committed in his judicial capacity.

He was arrested in flagrante delicto after being reported for offering a bribe of one million pesos to a public servant. The bribe was intended to influence the reclassification of a crime in various criminal cases. Elements of the Corruption Crimes Investigative Police seized the cash during his apprehension.

The state Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office reiterated its commitment to investigating and prosecuting any illicit acts, regardless of the position, hierarchical level, or public function of those accused.
