Hidalgo Governor Warns of Permanent Risk in 20 Municipalities Due to Fuel Theft; Evacuation in Epazoyucan After Pipeline Leak

Hidalgo Governor Julio Menchaca Salazar has issued a stark warning regarding the persistent danger posed by illegal fuel siphoning, known as 'huachicol,' in at least 20 municipalities across the state. The governor highlighted that the risk is particularly acute in areas where pipeline infrastructure is exposed, making it easier for criminal groups to tap into the lines.

Menchaca's remarks came after a recent incident in the community of Xolostitla, Epazoyucan, where a leak from a clandestine tap led to the precautionary evacuation of approximately 15 residents. This event occurred just a week after a pipeline fire in the same location, also attributed to an attempted hydrocarbon theft. These recurring incidents underscore the volatile nature of the illegal fuel trade.

The governor acknowledged the ongoing challenge, stating that despite coordination efforts between the state government, the Federal Government, the National Guard, and the Army, the crime continues unabated. He stressed that while the primary responsibility for combating fuel theft lies with federal authorities, Hidalgo is committed to supporting these efforts to reduce the activity, which he identified as a major concern for the state government due to the potential for catastrophic consequences.

Menchaca characterized the illegal extraction of fuel as "a theft from the nation" and emphasized the priority the state places on combating it. He noted that leaks, fires, and explosions resulting from these activities pose a significant danger, especially when they occur in or near populated areas. The governor also pointed out that individuals involved in this illicit trade have tragically lost their lives or sustained severe injuries while tampering with the pipelines, yet the activity remains lucrative for criminal organizations.

In a separate matter, Governor Menchaca commented on the arrival of Senator Adán Augusto López Hernández as the coordinator for the Fourth Electoral Circumscription, which includes Hidalgo. When asked about criticisms leveled against López Hernández, Menchaca stated that individuals must be accountable for their own careers and their impact on the public and their party. "Adán is my friend from many years ago," Menchaca said, "today he is a senator of the Republic, and each person must answer for their trajectory. I cannot vouch for anyone but myself."
