Former European Cup winner Jimmy Rimmer dies at 78

English football is mourning the loss of Jimmy Rimmer, a former goalkeeper and two-time European Cup winner, who passed away at the age of 78. His former clubs, Aston Villa and Manchester United, announced his death.

Rimmer was a key figure in Aston Villa's European Cup triumph in 1982, defeating Bayern Munich 1-0 in the final. However, his participation in that match was cut short due to a neck injury, forcing him off after just nine minutes.

His European success began earlier, with Manchester United in 1968, though he remained on the bench for the final against Benfica. Domestically, Rimmer established himself as a top-tier goalkeeper in the mid-1970s, first with Arsenal and then with Aston Villa. He played 287 league and cup games for Villa and was part of the team that won the English league title in 1981. He also represented England once in 1976.

Aston Villa expressed their condolences, stating, "The thoughts of everyone at the club are with Jimmy's family and friends during this extremely difficult time." Manchester United and Arsenal also offered their sympathies.
